Digital Canvas Prints
Digital Canvas Prints

Send or bring any photo or artwork in to us and we will turn it into a beautiful big canvas for you.

Give your special friend or loved one a unique gift! Or you can have your original artwork photographed in high resolution digital format and sell the giclee canvas prints as a faux painting!

What kind of images do we need?

35mm slides or negatives, photographs, original artwork or simply send us your digital camera files.

Whatever you send us has to be either scanned and / or sized up to the size you would like to get your giclee canvas printed at - e.g. 20"x30" (poster size) from a little 4"x6" photo original.

There are various ways you can send us your original:

Film Negative Slide

If you shot the image on 35mm film, your original negative or slide will get you a higher quality reproduction than a photo print. We scan at 4000 dpi optical with no interpolation, none of the detail on the film will be lost.

Surface scratches and dust are digitally removed and the image is enhanced for print.

Digital Files

If you have taken a digital photo, the highest resolution file you have will produce the highest quality enlargement.

The average 3.2 or 4 Megapixel camera will produce a file at its 'super fine' setting of around 900k to 1Mb. This will reproduce a fine canvas around a metre wide for you when it is sized up.
Having said that we can take a small 300k file up to poster size as the artist canvas we use is very forgiving and you will get a lovely painterly effect.

You can also send us the flash memory card and we will transfer the images from there for you.

Please leave files as a jpeg (.jpg) in RGB, do not convert to CMYK before sending to us.
If the file is under 10Mb please email it to us, otherwise please burn a CD and post it to us.

Print or Photo
If you only have the photo, try and look for the negative again.
All jokes aside, a photograph is not as good as the original slide or negative which is considered first generation. However we can produce amazing results from even poor photographs by restoring colour, increasing contrast and sharpness and removing defects. Adding an artistic effect and printing on canvas will hide a multitude of sins in the original and produce a unique artwork.

Artists Original
Your own original artwork may be given to us for photographing at high resolution, digitally in our professional photographic studio. You will get the chance to check a canvas proof for colour and resolution before we print and stretch the final canvas. This ensures you get a giclee print on canvas that you will be hard put to identify as a reproduction or your original!

Retouching and Colouring Options

If you'd like us to retouch your old photo we can bring it back to life and print it to canvas for another 75 years light safe enjoyment of old memories.

We can print colour pictures in full colour, true black and white, sepia tone, or selective colour for a hand-tinted look.

Whether your picture was shot on film or captured digitally, your colour picture has many creative possibilities.

Here are some tips for a successful digital canvas print. Scroll down to submit your image for professional assessment.

Get a digital camera of over 3.2 megapixels, or use your trusty 35mm film camera. Colour slides (100asa slide film scan better than negative for some reason). The higher the megapixels the bigger you can get your image eventually.

If you want to get a great image closeup of a flower - use a tripod (they are around $60 plus) so you don't get camera shake.

If you want a big print from your pic as opposed to a holiday print from your local chemist, be aware that you should compose the picture using the rules of thirds - i.e. one third sky and two thirds land or beach or the other way around but break your pic into thirds for best composition. More importantly, leave enough space around the subject to wrap the edge of the picture around a 2 inch canvas frame.

Send a jpeg via email to us and we'll give you a good idea if it will blow up to more than 30inches.

PhotoShop or Not?
Adobe's PhotoShop (tm) is universally recognized as the premier image editing program. Indeed, people often talk about PhotoShop as though it were the only alternative out there. However, it is really designed for professionals. While it is an incredibly powerful and sophisticated program, it is difficult to learn and operate, and includes many tools that most amateur photographers will never need. At $1200, it also comes with a hefty price tag.
Digital Image Resolution
Digital image resolution is the size of your image, measured in pixels ("picture elements"). A high-resolution image (such as 1600 x 1200 pixels) will result in a better printed photo than a low resolution image (such as 320 x 240 pixels), all other things being equal. If the resolution is too low for the size of the canvas chosen, the photograph will look fuzzy and indistinct. We recommend that you always use the highest resolution setting on your camera to ensure the best reproduction.
What is a pixel?
Pixels are the basic building blocks of every digital image. The more pixels in your photos, the better the prints will look. The term "resolution" refers to the number of pixels in the photo.
What is DPI?
DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch) are relative measurements that can mean many things depending on the application for which you are preparing your image. For the purposes of digital canvas finishing, this measurement is not relevant and will not affect your image file.

For example, an image that is 1024 x 768 at 100 DPI is the exact same file and has the same resolution as an image that is 1024 x 768 at 500 DPI. Both files contain a total of 786432 pixels in a grid that has 1024 pixels on one side and 768 pixels on the other side. A more reliable measure for digital canvas-finishing is the actual resolution, which represents the number of pixels that make up the image.
